Chief Chris Luhring of the Parkersburg Police Department is working on a counterfeit case involving postal money orders. He says a typical scam, like the one he's investigating, involves a con artist sending fake money orders to people in excess of the cost of an item those people are selling. "He was selling a dog and the dog was about 250 dollars, but he received a lot more than what the dog was worth of the shipping for this dog was going to be worth," Luhring says about a potential victim that received a fake money order.

This tipped off a potential eastern Iowa scam victim. The con artist hopes victims will cash the fake money order and send the excess money back to them, along with the item fraudulently purchased. "On average, they told me it takes approximately 3 months for the banks to find out that these are fraudulent and after the three months or when they determine that they would come back on
