Reading MSN Saves $992
An Independence, Iowa, woman called 1-800-423-2449 stating she received a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) showing medical bills paid, and she had not been hospitalized. Upon checking the telephone book, a volunteer discovered there were two people with the same name living in the area. The volunteer then contacted the hospital’s billing department to learn, the correct patient had been treated for injuries in an automobile accident and her automobile insurance carrier was responsible for the payment of the bill. A $992.45 refund was sent to Medicare and $190.92 to the caller's supplemental insurance company.

Make My Refund Out to Cash Please
A resident of Evansdale, Iowa, received a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) showing $812.00 paid by Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield for services she received while hospitalized. The dates of service, the providers and the services were all correct. She called for assistance because she also had paid the $812.00. An Operation Restore Trust of Iowa volunteer assisted her in receiving an $812.00 refund.

Decimal Point Creates Mispayment
A Cedar Rapids woman called after examining the Medicare Summary Notices (MSN) for her and her husband that Medicare had paid $11.00 for her flu shot and $110.00 for her husband's shot. An Operation Restore Trust of Iowa volunteer contacted the provider and pointed out the misplaced decimal point that created a $99.00 mispayment. The provider sent a refund to Medicare.
