You can have the “Power of One” by volunteering to tackle the multi-billion dollar healthcare fraud business. SMP’s grassroots efforts are successful because one volunteer here and one volunteer there help educate their peers to detect and report healthcare fraud. You can help recover money “stolen” from Medicare beneficiaries who worked decades making tax contributions to the Medicare trust funds. You can help recover benefits “stolen” from Medicare beneficiaries who are refused Medicare payments because a con artist stole their Medicare number and submitted bogus claims.
Is there a personal benefit SMP volunteers can receive? Sure there is. You can:
• Be active in your own community or travel to surrounding towns if you like
• Make new friends who have similar interests
• Keep as busy as you like, but with flexible hours
• Learn about the latest healthcare and identity theft scams
• Use your creative skills
o Writing newspaper or radio releases
o Giving engaging presentations to small groups
And you won’t do this alone. Your local SMP coordinator at your Area Agency on Aging will provide orientation and program training, continually update you with the latest information and tailor your volunteer activities to your interests and skills.
