Residents of the Waverly area have received voice mail on their home phones, reportedly from a well known carrier of a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D). The message states that there is a need to “confirm personal information” and that the request is an “emergency.” The Iowa SMP Coordinator phoned the toll free number that was given; it is answered as a recorded message that states their “caller ID system doesn’t recognize the phone number you are calling from,” so in order “to protect your privacy” you should call back from the “number where we left our message.” The Iowa SMP Coordinator called the published customer service number for the PDP and was told that message did not conform to the type of message that company would leave on a customer’s voice mail. This information has been referred to the investigator unit for Medicare Part D (referred to as the “MEDIC”) and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. This is a good reminder to be wary of revealing personal information when you receive an unexpected call or message.

Calls Promising Medicare or Insurance Premium Refunds – From Council Bluffs, Davenport and Clinton, IA we have reports of callers claiming Medicare recipients are due refunds and asking for Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and bank account information.
