Medicaid Dollars Recouped
October 5, 2001 Operation Restore Trust of Iowa received a call on our concerns line by an employee of a Belleplain, Iowa Nursing facility. The employee reported that a resident's daughter falsified her mother’s assets to qualify her for Title XIX benefits. The daugther asked the receptionist to notarize a quick claim deed to transfer the ownership of a 480 acre farm from the mother to the daughter in the amount of $1.00. The receptionist notarized the deed and once she realized what had taken place she called ORT. ORT referred the intake to Iowa’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit on October 9, 2001 where an investigation was immedicately opened. On July 12, 2004 a judgement was made and the defendent was ordered to repay $17,108.94 to Medicaid.

The $4,500 Wheelchair
Medicare paid $4586.84 for a wheelchair, according to a Medical Summary Notice received by a Clarence, Iowa, woman. The woman dialed 1-800-423-2449 and stated she has never had a wheelchair. An Operation Restore Trust of Iowa volunteer contacted her physician, who stated that he had not ordered a wheelchair for that patient. The volunteer then contacted the durable medical equipment company who received the payment from Medicare. The clerk discovered that the wheelchair was for a private pay individual whose name was listed directly under the name of the Clarence, Iowa, woman’s. The durable medical equipment company corrected the error and mailed a check for $4,586.84 to Medicare.

Osage Man Saves $5,000
An Osage, Iowa, gentleman received a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) showing that Medicare paid $4,653.90 and AARP paid $1,158.35 for a series of 5 treatments. The gentleman stated that he had only received the first treatment in the series. An Operation Restore Trust of Iowa volunteer contacted the billing department who corrected the error and refunded Medicare $3,723.90 and $ 926.68 were refunded to AARP.
